1.     Democracy is and ideal
2.     An ideal needs everybody to play the rules
3.     Democracy is fragile and not forever
4.     German 1930s:
a.     Kaiser Wilhelm abdicated and fled to Holland creating a vacuum
b.     It was crushed by the TOV
c.     Weimar republic is new and unstable
d.     Rampant poverty
e.     Great depression
f.      Failed harvests
g.     France seized more territory when Germany failed to make payments in 1923 (coal areas)
h.     The Nazi party begins
i.      They had solution
j.      A young man, poor, started joining the meetings à Hitler
k.     By 1932, the Nazi party was the largest in the Reichstag
l.      In 1933, the president of Germany appointed Hitler as chancellor.
m.   Media was taken over
n.     Education was modified to political purposes
o.     Jews become targets
p.     In 1933, Hitler and the Pop signed  a “concordat”
q.     Industry improved
r.      Re-armament begins
s.     Proclamation of freedom to rearm rally in 1935
t.      Autobahn created, world fastest highway

7.     Hitler created autobahn

8.     Hitler also created Prora à a 4.5 km long hotel (10 000 rooms)

Day 1
Lecture notes:
1.     Prior to WW1, countries had been split into two main groups or factions.
2.     In the 1930’s a strong movement of fascism was used in modern government.
3.     People are suffering due to the king.
4.     The king was actually doing a good job.
5.     If you took out the king, there will be food for everybody.
6.     The king then was removed and exchanged by an evil king who killed people.
7.     Germany, Italy, Russia à big three
8.     Germany tricked Russia
9.     USSR à Communist Dictatorship
10.  Italy à Fascist Dictatorship
11.  Germany à Socialist Dictatorship
