CLASS 2
                  Lecture Notes:
1.     World War I was the most terrible war ever known by men
2.     Almost everyone on both sides of the war imagined that the war would be over quickly.
3.     This was because of the new “mechanized” warfare that was available at that time.
4.     For the first time, automobiles and airplanes were used, tanks came into being, U boats, dreadnoughts, dirigibles, rapid-fire and long-distance cannon, howitzers and mortars.
5.     Germany’s plan on rapid advancement never came to light.
6.      As they got “bogged down” in northern France and Belgium.
7.     The British and French could not push back the Germans.
8.     Due to intense shelling, trench warfare came into existence, and the lines became fixed and almost never changed throughout the war.
9.     No one had won the war,
10.  World war one was a war of attrition

12.  Trench system
13.  No man’s land was full with barbed wire.
14.  The war turned into a battle of artillery.
15.  German’s weapon is called the Howitzer.

WEEK 2
CLASS 1- TUESDAY JANUARY 14, 2014
                  Lecture Notes:
1.     In 1900, almost everyone would agree that to be a great nation, you must colonize.
2.     In 1800, both France and Britain had large empires, and continued to grow during the 19th century.
3.     In 1870’s, Germany and Italy became united countries for the 1st time, and both wanted to develop overseas empires.
4.     In the years up to 1900, there was a strong competition between European powers for expansion, especially in Africa.
5.     The key point: Prussian war
6.     By 1914, large parts of the world were controlled by various European powers.
7.     This competition caused several disputes, one of which was the “Morocco Incident” in 1906 and 1911 between France and Germany.
8.     Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, said in 1898: “Our future lies upon the ocean”, and started building up a navy very rapidly.
9.     In 1900, Britain’s navy was the largest in the world. But, as its empire expanded, Britain realized that its navy wasn’t big enough to protect its “holdings”, and was worried about the growing German navy.
