CLASS 1- TUESDAY JANUARY 14, 2014
Lecture
Notes:
1.
In 1900, almost everyone would agree that to be
a great nation, you must colonize.
2.
In 1800, both France and Britain had large
empires, and continued to grow during the 19th century.
3.
In 1870’s, Germany and Italy became united
countries for the 1st time, and both wanted to develop overseas
empires.
4.
In the years up to 1900, there was a strong
competition between European powers for expansion, especially in Africa.
5.
The key point: Prussian war
6.
By 1914, large parts of the world were
controlled by various European powers.
7.
This competition caused several disputes, one of
which was the “Morocco Incident” in 1906 and 1911 between France and Germany.
8.
Wilhelm II, Emperor of Germany, said in 1898:
“Our future lies upon the ocean”, and started building up a navy very rapidly.
9.
In 1900, Britain’s navy was the largest in the
world. But, as its empire expanded, Britain realized that its navy wasn’t big
enough to protect its “holdings”, and was worried about the growing German
navy.
